Populus fremontii
14” Wide x 13” Long x 8” Tall
I found this beautiful burl on a downed cottonwood in a dry creek bed in remote eastern Arizona. Its highly figured interior appears to be held in the embrace of a playful, peaked burl exterior.

The rough turned bowl blank for this exquisite bowl was a gift from the late Robert Hamada, a master woodturner who was named a Living Treasure by the State of Hawaii.

Believe it or not, this wood was buried after a tsunami and stayed underground for more than 40,000 years without rotting! I obtained this piece in 2024 from the north end of the North Island of New Zealand. Note the spectacular “flame” pattern.

Cinnamomum camphora
15” Diameter x 5.75” Tall
This large, mature camphor tree, in downtown Napa (on Calistoga St.), was being removed by the city. The owner’s permission allowed me three large pieces. The tight compression grain results in a deep chatoyance, generating movement under light.
Robinia pseudoacacia
12.5” w x 6.5” h
This black locust burl was harvested from a tree being removed near Fuller Park in downtown Napa. Intricate burl patterns give it an almost stone-like appearance and make it a wonderful centerpiece display.
